What a twist: just six months ago, the new federal government announced in its coalition agreement that it would ‘strengthen’ humanitarian assistance and ensure ‘adequate funding’. Six months later, the 2026 federal budget shows a 52 per cent cut in funding compared to the last government’s budget for 2024, and the responsible department in the Foreign Office is about to be dissolved altogether.
