Members Exchange with Dr Henrik Maihack

Date: 06.10.2026
Time: 17:00 - 18:00
Location: Berlin Mitte

Germany intends to realign its development policy to reflect German interests and in light of a new geopolitical situation. This has already led to a new, controversially debated strategy by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), to ongoing debates about the future of the BMZ itself, and to the establishment of a new ‘South-North Commission’ chaired by prominent representatives, which is due to commence its work in the coming days.

According to the BMZ, the South-North Commission on Development “aims to intensify relations with the countries of the Global South and establish a global network”. It brings together “stakeholders from all regions of the world to develop joint solutions to global challenges and overcome polarisation.”

With former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and former President of Costa Rica Laura Chinchilla heading the Commission, it is intended to build on the highly acclaimed North-South Commission led by Willy Brandt from 1977 to 1983 and to develop innovative proposals for the future of international cooperation.

With Dr Henrik Maihack, Head of Secretariat of the South-North Commission on Development, CHA will discuss the objectives, the steps taken so far, and the criticised plans of the new Commission at a closed-door event.

Participation is by invitation only and is reserved for representatives of CHA member organisations.
