How can humanitarian crises be reported on in an informative and interesting way? And how can reporting reach as many people as possible in times of increasingly complex crises? ‘Aktion Deutschland Hilft’ organised the “Humanitarian Aid Journalism Award” for the third time to answer these questions.
With his multimedia report from South Sudan, Tobias Dammers won out over six other journalists and impressed the five-member jury of the competition, including CHA Director Ralf Südhoff, who gave the laudatory speech at the award ceremony on 20 November 2024 at the ARD Capital Studio in Berlin.
‘With his contribution, Tobias Dammers succeeds in presenting the topic of “humanitarian action” for the needs of different target groups – for watching and clicking, for reading and listening,’ says jury member Ralf Südhoff, explaining the jury’s decision. ‘With his presentation, he gives a voice to the people on the ground and creates a better understanding of the concerns and perspectives of those affected. He makes it impressively clear why the project portrayed is of great importance by letting them have their say. He also draws a vivid link to the situation in Germany and local politics in times of planned cuts to the German humanitarian budget by explaining in a factual and well-founded manner what an end to German support for such a project would mean,’ Südhoff continues.
