Change of government in Washington and Berlin – What’s ahead for German humanitarian aid in these turbulent times?
The German government has a new humanitarian strategy and will soon have a new government, while a political shift to the right has already taken place in European capitals and in Brussels and the future involvement of the USA is fundamentally in question with the shut-down of USAID.
Dr Ina Heusgen has been Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid at the Federal Foreign Office since autumn 2024. Four days after the Bundestag elections, and as part of our ‘Strategy Snacks’ series, we discussed with her what these developments mean for the new humanitarian strategy, which priorities of the strategy should be pursued in times of declining budgets and how, and what goals she has set herself for her new position.
