A presentation and discussion of the new ACF study

YEMEN: WHEN WATER IS USED AS A WEAPON OF WAR

Authors:

  • Jovita Sandaite – Humanitarian Advocacy Officer Yemen, ACF
  • Pierre Marie Goimard – TA WaSH and former Country Director Yemen, ACF

The study demonstrates how for almost five years now, the war in Yemen has been fought in a way that purposely contributed to the country’s fall into an unprecedented water, sanitation, hygiene (WaSH) and an overall public health crisis. . By analysing the underlying causes of the WaSH emergency it shows how assets and commodities indispensable to the survival of the civilian population like water, irrigation and sanitation facilities and systems have been either targeted directly or at least left unprotected.

Since the beginning of the war in March 2015, all parties to conflict knowingly continued pursuing actions that eventually caused the complete collapse of the water and sanitation sector, deepened the public health crisis and resulted directly and indirectly in death or disease of millions of people. In that sense, the study is a case in point for the systematic and intentional use of water as a weapon of war in Yemen.

With the study as a basis, there will take place an open dialogue to discuss the main arguments, share experiences from organisations and networks, and reflect on possible mitigation measures and coordinated advocacy approaches.

Please note: The event will take place in English and will be non-public.
